This summer was my daughter’s 3rd Adventure Treks program. She started with a 13-day, the next summer was 20 days, and this past summer was 24. She’s already signed up for a 30-day program next summer.
I cannot overstate how much fun, adventure and growth my daughter experiences through these trips.
She pushes herself to meet new people and to try new outdoor skills. She has friendships that have lasted outside of the program, with the kids visiting each other in their home towns. The staff at AT seem to be incredibly fun while also technically skilled and attentive to safety.

Great experience for teens to individuate while also forming exceptionally strong social bonds. It is definitely a step up from a summer camp (limited comforts), but it isn’t as hardcore as some outfits. They are very proactive in selecting the groups and try to create teams that can all gel together for two weeks or more. The kids soon find out they need to work together and share tasks. I did a lot of research on these types of programs before landing on Adventure Treks. I felt AT met my standards of a program where I felt comfortable sending my son for three weeks out in the wilderness. While he was away, I missed him, but I didn’t worry. Jaxon was nervous—not scared, but nervous—about group dynamics, not knowing anyone, and doing new things he hadn’t done before. But all of that was washed away by the instructors and the environment that AT requires of its participants. AT was so responsive leading up to the trip with every single email and phone call I made. We felt completely comfortable in AT’s expertise. Very professional and thorough communication always. Initially I was overwhelmed with the thought of planning flights and getting clothing together, but AT was very generous with their time over the phone giving me advice.
I loved that fun was emphasized at the end of the school year. AT gets it. AT clearly states the rules, where they stand on them, and they have a backbone about enforcement. That’s so reassuring.

Attie had the best summer of his life. I can tell he is changed as a person in a positive way. This means a lot to him and to me. It is an opportunity to meet new and interesting people that you will become very close to and come out of the experience with meaningful friendships. Attie loved being able to hear about people’s stories from their different parts of the country and the world. He had such a wonderful group, and the instructors are the best. Very caring, fun, but steady. The different activities that they engage in on each trip are great—so it is not just one thing but at least three different learning experiences on one trip. Traditions are created and remembered. It was on of the best experiences all around that he has ever had.

This is the kind of experience I wish every child could have—being outside without technology and learning to be responsible for oneself and for the well-being of the community, with the kind and patient support of instructors who are knowledgeable and fun-loving. In Zev’s own words: “I learned that I can just be myself and that there are people out there who will like me for who I am.” Since coming home, Zev is more willing to take responsibility for himself and for other things that need to be done in the house. He is better at self-regulation. He is more willing to help with household chores. He is more aware that he is part of a community (a family) and needs to pitch in. Zev had the time of his life. He made terrific friends, loved being outside and away from technology (which is saying something for a kid like Zev who is REALLY into tech), and just got a chance to have fun and be silly.

My daughter absolutely loved every moment of her trip. So much so that as soon as she entered the house we planned and booked her next summer with AT! Absolute best experience of Jack’s life two years in a row. Every detail was handled in a manner that exceeded our expectations. So much positive has come out of AT. AT gave Jack a gift of a lifetime. He says it changed him. He says Alaska was the BEST month of his life. He says he will remember it forever and will always look back on Alaska and California trips as a huge sense of accomplishment and pride. Independence, grit, friendships, inspiration to do more and see more of the world. Acts of kindness and empathy… I could go on and on. While on his way home he sent an email to a restaurant in town applying for an assistant server position. He got the job yesterday! AT gave him the confidence and desire to do more. We looked at AT and NOLS. Both seemed outstanding, but Adventure Treks got back to us faster and more personably. My son Max is a 17-year-old with a great attitude and a ton of potential. He also spends way too much time on his phone and playing video games. He has worked super hard in school and enjoys some sports, but mostly his big successes were related to video games. Until the Adventure Treks trip to Peru! Since his return we have heard many stories about counting on his group, learning to work with and trust people, trying new things, and discovering history with new eyes. He has even joked about putting his phone down for hours and then not knowing where it is, which was unheard of just a few weeks ago. On top of all that, Max just loved the food, the friends, the instructors, and the mountains! 10 out of 10 for sure. PS: Max left “hating” fruit. After a day of fruit tasting in Peru, he has been converted!

As a parent, I really believe it is my job to show my child that he can do hard things. Of course, included in this theory is that we have to expose him to hard things. Challenges he wouldn’t get at home, with new people and in new places. Showing him that some of life’s greatest experiences can be uncomfortable. So when the time comes that he has a hard obstacle, he can look back at the experiences we have provided him and see that he has in within himself to do hard things. Being dependent on the instructors alone was valuable. They had to improvise and pivot and change plans when the weather and conditions changed. This helped show Oliver that dealing with the unexpected can be fun. It doesn’t have to be scary. Oliver is showing more confidence.

Patrick had an amazing time on his Adventure Treks experience to the Pacific Northwest. He gained greater confidence in himself and his own abilities and made lots of friends! The longevity of AT program, especially the years of successfully programming these types of adventure and outdoor activities, group size, and the detail and communication from the administration make AT stand out. For the adventure side, he enjoyed the hiking, kayaking, and especially the whitewater rafting! With two AT adventures completed for our son, we would highly recommend this to anyone. Each of Ryan’s trips have been great experiences for him. AT was not our daughter’s idea, and she made it pretty clear that she wasn’t excited to go. We knew that she was more than capable of doing the trip and hoped (and expected) that she would end up liking it more than she expected. As the trip got closer, she started to get more excited. We were so happy when she told us during her first call home that she was loving it, and when she returned that she wanted to go back next summer. It’s what we hoped for but even we were a little surprised at how enthusiastic she was about the experience—including the hard parts. She proved to herself that she was very capable of being out of her comfort zone and away from her creature comforts. The fact that she chose to do British Columbia next summer is a clear indication to us that her self-confidence has grown and her knowledge that she is capable of more.

I have loved hearing about Selah pushing herself in the outdoors. There are some activities that she was nervous about, but with compassionate and fun staff, Selah was able to do everything and have a really fun time doing it. She is the kind of kid who has to feel safe in order to participate in something that is inherently a little risky. But she participated and absolutely loved everything about AT. From the very beginning, when my husband and I started looking into various trips for our boys, we were very impressed with everyone that we talked with at Adventure Treks. In particular, the directors, Dave and Amanda, couldn’t have been nicer and more informative and knowledgeable about the trips. Fast forward to post-trip, I am extremely pleased and actually in awe of all of the varied physical challenges, fun games, and true connections without electronics that both of my sons experienced on the trip. The communication from top to bottom has been just wonderful.
There are several things that I think they learned on the trip. I think they learned that they didn’t need their phones as much as they once thought. I also think that they learned to be themselves and be “free” of any peer expectation and felt accepted. I hope that in some small way this attitude of acceptance can translate to the real world (high school and middle school). Almost as soon as we greeted the kids at the airport on closing day, they both said, “We want to go back!” We never in a million years thought that our nervous and hesitant boys would have had this remark post-trip. Our feelings weren’t hurt, but rather our hearts were so full knowing that they truly enjoyed themselves and made new connections with their peers, leaders, and outdoor adventures. They are already thinking about the next trip in 2025! I couldn’t recommend this company enough. I am truly so grateful for the experience that they provided for my sons.

Sending your child across the country on their own to be cared for by strangers for three weeks outdoors is not a small or easy decision, but this was absolutely the best choice we could make for our son at this time in his life. The trip was a good mix of outdoor adventure activities that he loved like hiking, rafting, and rock climbing, and plenty of time to just be a kid outdoors with other kids (especially without phones and WiFi). This is the type of experience that builds children’s self-esteem and the confidence that they can tackle any obstacle with preparation, persistence, and plenty of snacks.

I think being independent was awesome, and making new friends without being judged. Everyone has a “box” in high school, and the ability to escape those arbitrary definitions and meet new people was fantastic. Super confidence-building. And he did it while exploring amazing places and doing things he loves.

I loved that he did a variety of activities but seemed to do everything twice, so the challenges built on each other. This was Aleksa’s second AT experience and definitely not the last one! Last summer, Aleksa went to Yellowstone and this year she joined California Challenge. I dropped my son off with a bunch of strangers to disappear into the woods for 16 days. I saw pictures of him with mountains, crossing streams, sea kayaking, rock climbing, and generally goofing off as teens do, being outside in nature with incredible views every day. The mix of activities meant that my son could both do things he was familiar with (hiking, biking) and try new things (rafting, climbing) in a safe and supportive environment. Adventure Treks provides an unforgettable experience that kids today cannot get in their home environment. Socially, they interact without electronics, so they resort to “old-fashioned” entertainment: talking, singing, telling stories, playing games, and reading. Environmentally, they are stripped to the bare minimum, sometimes resulting in sleeping under the stars, which was a favorite with my daughter. This was Grace’s first AT trip. AT has been such a formative experience for her brother that I think she has always been curious to know what all the fuss was about. She wanted to see if she could do it. And actually we wanted to see if she could do it, too. Mission accomplished! As parents, you search for experiences that will stretch and grow your child; from their earliest age you share books and music and art and sports and travel with them. But you CANNOT provide your child the experience AT can—because they can only stretch and grow in some crucial ways in your absence. AT challenges your child physically, socially and emotionally, but with lots of support and care and fun. It’s everything you want for your kid. The discomfort and physical challenges of the trip were really good for my daughter. The first backpack on the Olympic Peninsula was really hard for her, but afterward she was exhilarated by her accomplishment and by the bonding her group did through the challenge. And I also believe she loved all that time spent with her peers, away from phones and school, quality time without academic or social pressure. She absolutely loved that.

Bridger is a pretty introverted person and was somewhat apprehensive to go to Adventure Treks. But he made friends quickly and had a really incredible summer. He had experiences that he could not have found anywhere else! His limits were tested, and he found that he didn’t reach the boundaries of his own limitations. He discovered that he was stronger and more capable than he had realized. So cool! Excellent. I felt that the communication was really first-class. You all were clear and very responsive. Dash had a great time getting to know his instructors and peers. He got out of his comfort zone, and even participated in an activity he already knew he didn’t like. Two of my daughters participated in different California Challenge trips separately over the last two years. We had hoped for both of them that they would not only have fun, memorable experiences, but also ones which would promote a sense of confidence and independence.
