Chrys

Instructor

Chrys grew up in Colorado and currently works as a teacher in Portland, after having worked in alpine restoration and trail building with Rocky Mountain Field Institute, and as a field instructor for the Northwest Regional Outdoor School. Chrys has also earned firefighter certificates; spent a semester with NOLS in Patagonia; led wilderness leadership trips for Educo Leadership Adventures and the Westwind Stewardship Group; and helped manage Westwind’s 500-acre wilderness site and summer camp on the Oregon coast.

The Evergreen State College, bachelor’s degree in environmental studies; Concordia University, master’s degree in teaching (integrated science and advanced math)

Favorite hobbies

I love riding bikes for fun and picnics! Bikepacking has become my favorite way to see different places in this past year.

Favorite outdoor achievement

I did a solo backpacking trip through Iceland last year. It meant a lot to me because of the physical, environmental, and emotional challenges. It was rainy, cold, and windy, but I made so many friends along the trail and felt like the trip reaffirmed for myself who I am.

Favorite outdoor memory

Sitting next to Prince William Sound in Alaska watching whales swim by and talking about life with my students and co-instructors.

Favorite place in the world

Anywhere that I’m up in the alpine. I love the world of flowers above tree line.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

I can’t wait to see what familiar plants grow in the mountains where I’m going this summer!
