Itinerary
Hike in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
We'll spend several days exploring different areas of Cockscomb Basin, the largest protected wilderness areas in Belize known for its incredible efforts to help preserve the endangered jaguar. We'll hike to a jungle waterfall as a warm-up day hike for the three-day backpack on the Victoria Peak Trail that will start the next day. Though we won't summit Victoria Peak itself due to monsoon season, we'll get to enjoy everything else this gorgeous tropical rainforest has to offer, including wildlife-watching for monkeys, toucans, coatimundi, and much more. After our backpack, we'll cool off with a float down Stann Creek.
Tour Mayan ruins
Perched atop a ridge in western Belize, above the Mopan River, is the towering archeological site Xunantunich. There are several main groups of structures we'll explore, including pyramids, palaces, temples, and burial chambers. As you traverse the ancient site, keep your eyes peeled for howler and spider monkeys overhead and iguanas basking in the sun.
Sea kayak in Tobacco Caye
After taking a boat shuttle to Tobacco Cate, we'll prep for our sea kayak expedition for the next several days. We'll paddle along the Belize Barrier Reef system each morning, setting up camp on islands and snorkeling in the afternoons. If we're lucky, we'll get to join some drumming and singing sessions with Garifuna locals!
Enjoy multiple adventures in Mayflower Bocawina National Park
Students will spend several days exploring this park, home to Mayan ruins, waterfalls, extensive trail networks, and colorful wildlife. Zipline through the jungle canopy, hike to tumbling falls and swim in sparkling turquoise pools, rappel down cliffs, and explore unexcavated archeological sites!
Explore the ATM Cave
The Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave is one of the coolest landmarks in all of Belize. Discovered between 300 and 600 AD, the Mayans didn't venture into these tunnels for several hundred more years. In the years following, it became an important ceremonial site. Today, you can still find well-preserved human skeletons and artifacts. We'll hike through a nature preserve first, and then we'll get to swim and walk through different chambers!
