Camping

Most of our nights are spent at "frontcountry" campsites, where we'll generally have a more developed campsite with running water, toilets, and sometimes cell phone service. This may be a public or private campground. We often stay at the same frontcountry site a few days in a row.

The other three nights will be spent "backcountry" camping, referring to wilderness locations on the Olympic Coast where we are most likely out of cell phone service and away from our vehicles, electricity, and other amenities. Multi-day activities like backpacking take place in the backcountry.

Challenge/fitness level

No experience necessary; all skill levels welcome! We'll teach students everything they need to know to be successful and have lots of fun.

Fitness and physical challenge are subjective, so Adventure Treks does not "rate" its trips based on challenge. However, because we’ll be engaged in different outdoor activities throughout each trip, our students have the responsibility to be physically fit. We know physical fitness looks different for everyone, but it’s important to come prepared so that you and your fellow students can succeed. One student not coming prepared with physical fitness will negatively impact the entire group. In the months leading up to their trip, students should develop a routine that emphasizes stamina and sustaining a moderate level of exertion for many hours, several days in a row. Running, swimming, bicycling, aerobics classes, and team sports are all beneficial and will help improve cardiovascular fitness in preparation for a student’s trip.

Ted Cowan, parent from El Macero, CA

The level of detail, of thinking, of planning, of communication, etc., was at the highest level. I appreciated the communications around the details of the expedition, both pre- and post-trip. But I also appreciated the sense of purpose and the culture that Adventure Treks inculcates within its staff and hopes to share with young people. AT sees experiences in the backcountry not just as a place to push one's physical limits, but also as a place to have fun and to wonder. The variety of experiences in the Northwest trip, coupled with a firm understanding of meeting their students where they are in their own journeys learning about outdoor adventure, gave me confidence that this was the right experience for my son.

Katy Ancelet, parent from New Orleans, LA

Etienne underestimated the difficulty level of Adventure Treks but was pleasantly surprised by his ability meet the challenges presented. Adventure Treks provided an environment that taught him responsibility and preparedness. We had a long talk when he got home about how he didn't think he could do it sometimes, but the instructors were helpful and encouraging. He is proud of what he accomplished and is so excited to share his experiences with his friends.

Brooks Allen, parent from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

Adventure Treks provides a unique experience for a child to learn, grow, and be challenged within a positively reinforcing team environment. The experience has boosted my son's self-esteem and reinforced his resolve to take on new challenges.

Virginia Lopez, parent from Puerto Rico

Patrick had an amazing time on his Adventure Treks experience to the Pacific Northwest. He gained greater confidence in himself and his own abilities and made lots of friends! The longevity of AT program, especially the years of successfully programming these types of adventure and outdoor activities, and the detail and communication from the administration make AT stand out. For the adventure side, he enjoyed the hiking, kayaking, and especially the whitewater rafting! Also, learning to work toward shared goals with a group of previously unknown people, coming together and getting to know people from all over the US and further was one of the benefits of the trip. Since returning he has stayed in touch lot of his group and they are planning to meet for another AT experience next summer!
